The JBoss SOA Platform Has Arrived!

Contribution by Mark Little, Director, Software Engineering

It’s taken us a while, but we’ve finally released the first version of our Service Oriented Architecture Platform, aka the SOA Platform 4.2. This is the culmination of many, many months of effort that actually dates back to the start of 2006 when we were still an independent JBoss entity. Just when we were on the edge of selling support contracts for JBossESB, we changed direction with Red Hat and went for the platform approach. So first there was the EAP and now there’s the SOA-P. This approach is actually better though, because we have spent a lot of the time and effort in making sure that the entire stack is stable, reliable, robust and performs.

We’ve been working on this initiative with some important partners, such as ActiveEndpoints and SOA Software, but the platform is primarily pure JBoss. There’s obviously the ESB that glues everything together, but also included is the great JMS implementation (JBoss Messaging) as our key transport, and JBossWS for those tricky Web Services interoperability requirements. JBossAS support comes out-of-the-box (though not mandatory), which allows us to tie in to some of those unique and cool capabilities such as Web Services Transactions, part of JBossTS. Ever thought about writing compensations for your services: much better than relying on traditional ACID transactions in long-running interactions. Now, many people may not be at that stage for their applications, but it’s there if and when it’s needed.

Red Hat Delivers Next-Generation SOA Integration with JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform

Contributed by: Pierre Fricke, director, Product Line Management SOA Products

In 2005, not long after I joined JBoss, we began working to define a strategy to deliver a next-generation SOA Platform to the enterprise and mass markets to expand the opportunity for businesses to leverage SOA integration and business process automation. We talked with customers and potential partners throughout the process and in mid-2006 embarked on a strategy that leveraged existing and mature JBoss.org open source projects, customer contributions, including a major existing custom ESB donation that had been running for over three years at the time, and the open source community at large.

JBoss ESB 4.0 made its debut at the end of 2006 and was followed up by a second- generation ESB in August 2007, JBoss ESB 4.2. JBoss ESB 4.2 became the platform for our early adopter program, which has about a dozen enterprises spanning multiple industries such as transportation, financial, manufacturing, government and others. The JBoss productization team then turned their attention to delivering an enterprise-ready and consumable JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform 4.2 announced today, February 14, 2008 with planned delivery by the end of the month.

Red Hat Named a Leader in Independent Information as a Service (IaaS) Report

Red Hat was recently among the select companies that Forrester Research invited to participate in its Q1 2008, Forrester Wave Report, Information-As-A-Service. In its evaluation, Forrester recognized Red Hat as a leader in IaaS, citing MetaMatrix as an asset to the company.

From the report:
“Red Hat: Strong offering and good momentum. Last year, Red Hat acquired the assets of MetaMatrix, which was already a key IaaS player. Red Hat is aiming to deliver a comprehensive IaaS solution that can meet all possible use cases. MetaMatrix has in the past executed an effective IaaS strategy, which is why it already has credible customer deployments that span various industries, including financial services, telecommunications, government and retail.”

JBoss World is Back, and Bigger Than Ever

It’s been a while since JBoss World was last held in the U.S. in June 2006 in Las Vegas, but community, customer and partner interest for JBoss technology and the JBoss World event continues to grow. In fact, JBoss World Orlando is the biggest JBoss World yet, with close to 800 attendees!

While over 32 percent of attendees identify themselves as developers or engineers, the other cool statistic is that nearly 38 percent of all attendees hold CxO, VP, Director or Architect roles. This diversity will provide a great opportunity for the JBoss.org community and JBoss Enterprise Middleware customers to rub elbows and exchange ideas on how to get the most value from JBoss technologies. It’s clear that JBoss Enterprise Middleware has the attention of IT decision makers more than ever before. Why? Customers are finding that open source middleware delivers greater value than alternatives. They are deploying more and more mission-critical applications and services, and they are expanding their open source middleware reference architectures beyond the application server.

IM for Collaboration

Over the past few weeks, my assistant and my team have convinced me to use Instant Messaging (IM) or chat services for team collaboration. This is not new to me: we used IM as a communications tool when I was at Capital One. I even used IM from time to time during my first months at Red Hat. However, I found that I was away from my computer often enough, and busy enough, that taking the time to change my work style didn’t seem to be worth the effort.

I have changed my opinion. Since the beginning of 2008, I have worked to be online as much as possible. It has changed the way I interact with my team and with the entire organization.

Help Shape Fedora 9: Alpha Release Now Available

As Fedora contributors, one of the most exciting parts of the development process of new Fedora distributions is determining which cool, new features are included in the next release. Fedora 9 (Sulphur) is due out at the end of April 2008, and we started making plans for it as soon as we released Fedora 8 back in November. We’ve been implementing the changes we want included in this release, and with the Fedora 9 Alpha release today, it’s time for the whole community’s input. Obtain your Alpha live spin here.

During each Fedora cycle, there is an Alpha release, a Beta release and a series of weekly snapshot releases. The Alpha release gives everyone the opportunity to provide feedback on the work that has been done so far as the first step in the testing cycle. It’s the first time that the larger Fedora community can get really involved in testing out the new features and is encouraged to provide input on what’s working, and what’s not. It’s easy to gain access to the Alpha release because you don’t have to install any software — everything you need is provided through live CDs. Then, to give us feedback, you can file bug reports and enhancement requests and make other recommendations.

Red Hat Growth Recognized by Forbes Magazine

Last week, Forbes recognized Red Hat on its list of the top 25 fastest-growing technology companies in America. Forbes’ sixth-annual list includes a broad spectrum of companies from biotech to aerospace, and recognizes seven software-related companies. Red Hat made the list this year for the first time and was ranked eleventh overall. Other top names in technology on the list include Google, ranked first overall, and SalesForce.com, ranked second.

The list may be published annually, but the criteria for inclusion is based on a long horizon of performance and the delivery of solid results that reflect hard work over the years. The criteria for Forbes’ list mainly focused on sales growth, profitability, growth outlook and the lack of legal, accounting or corporate governance issues.
